Shakuhachi
Japanese bamboo flute with five holes and no mouthpiece, capable of subtleties unequalled by any other flutes in the world. Used for meditation by Zen monks.
Rabab
Afghan lute with 13 sympathetic strings. A folk instrument with a very earthy character and an especially “dry” tone quality. The three main gut strings are stretched across a goat skin.
Zither
Originally from Bavaria, with different strings and tunings.
Sarangi
Bowed instrument from India with 3 main gut strings and 35 sympathetic strings.
Sounds traditionally like a cello, here it has been used in a percussive way (plucked).
Kyeezee
Bronze chimes used in the Buddhist temples of Burma.
Angklung
Bamboo rattles in tuned pitch from Java Sumatra.
Bodhran
Irish tambourine drum, 50 centimetres in diameter. Played with a mallet while the other hand produces varying tones by pressing on the drum skin.

Believing to have understood something about the essence of life Tsui-Yen left his monastery at a young age to travel through China. After many years, on his return his old master asked him: “Tell me about the essence of life!” Tsui-Yen answered: “When there are no clouds over the mountain the moonlight penetrates the ripples of the lake.” The master looked at his former disciple in anger: “You are getting old, your hair is grey, you have just a few teeth left and still you have no understanding of life.” Tsui-Yen lowered his eyes, tears streaming over his face. After a few minutes he asked: “Please, would you tell me about the essence of life?” “When there are no clouds over the mountain,” responded the master, “the moonlight penetrates the ripples of the lake!”

(Traditional Chinese Koan)
