| The Shakuhachi
A Japanese bamboo flute having only 5 holes and no mouthpiece, but nevertheless or rather therefore a level of subtlety unequalled by any other flute in the world. It is used for meditation by Zen monks. |
| The Rabab
A lute from Afghanistan having 13 resonance strings. A folk instrument with a very earthy character, which has a very special kind of dry tone quality. The 3 main gut-strings are strung across a goat skin. |
| The Sho
A kind of mouth-organ from Japan, consisting of 17 reed pipes that are inserted in a cup-shaped wind chest. By blowing into this wind chest and closing holes in the pipes a series of chords can be produced. As these pipes produce a sound when the player breathes in and out, a constant tone can be obtained. The slightest amount of dampness disturbs the sound, and therefore this is probably the only instrument in the world which has to be heated before playing. |
| The Zither
Originally from Bavaria, South Germany, with different strings and tuning. |
| The Sitar
A string instrument from India with 15 resonance strings and 56 melody strings, and a resonance body made from a dried gourd. The frets are movable. |
