Total Time: 65 : 25 All compositions by Krzysztof Komeda Photo of Krzysztof Komeda by Marek A. Karewicz Recorded February 1997 An ECM Production ECM Records My very first film, Two Men and a Wardrobe, was also a first for Krzysztof Komeda, who had not until then written for the screen. Thereafter he contributed magnificent scores for several more of my films, notably Rosemarys Baby, whose success owed much to his empathy and creative imagination. Krzysztof Komeda was not only a valued professional collaborator but a close and dear friend, and it is my abiding regret that his untimely death robbed me of him in both those capacities. Roman Polanski Krzysztof Komeda (1931 1969) wrote music for more than 40 films, including classics of the Polish cinema by Roman Polanski and Andrzej Wajda. It was Polanski who gave Komeda his first commission in 1957, and used his music in almost all of his films over the next decade, bringing him to Hollywood in 1967 to work on Rosemarys Baby. Improvisation was integral to Komedas movie scores yet he regarded his film writing as an activity separate from his performing life as a bandleader and pianist. Krzysztof Komeda is generally credited with the launching, in the mid 1950s, of the modern jazz movement in Poland, and his recordings particularly 1965s Astigmatic made important contributions toward the shaping of a European aesthetic in jazz composition. The jazz scene was very active in Poland at the time and there was a lot of communication going on with film directors, writers, actors. In the middle of all this was Komeda a very quiet man. At rehearsals he told us nothing, nothing. He would give us the score and we would play and the silence was very strong and intense. He wouldnt say if we were right or wrong in our approach. Hed just smile. We played a lot, considering the period (1963 67). Journeys to Scandinavia. Residencies at the Cafe Montmartre in Copenhagen and the Golden Circle in Stockholm. We played in Norway, too. There were festivals in Kongsberg, Bled, Prague, Warsaw. And we gigged all over Poland. Komeda wrote his most important compositions for this band taking off in the direction of larger forms with works like Svantetic and Requiem as well as towards free jazz in which he was increasingly interested. Tomasz Stanko My first encounter with the music of Krzysztof Komeda was through the cinema when I saw Knife In The Water by Roman Polanski. In Poland, some years later, I heard his music played live by his quintet with Tomasz Stanko. This was the time when certain film makers were emphasizing music and sounds as an equal counterpart to images. Directors of the French Nouvelle Vague for instance, Bergman and Tarkovsky, Wajda, Kawalerowicz and Polanski, Antonioni, Rosi, Fellini and Pasolini collaborated with composers such as Antoine Duhamel, Georges Delerue, Giovanni Fusco, Nino Rota and Krzysztof Komeda. Over the course of various recording projects with Tomasz Stanko, I was continually struck by his lyrical affinity to Krzysztof Komeda, and so the idea of bringing Komedas music back to life developed naturally. Tomasz and I were particularly interested in looking into the shadows and the darker side of compositions like Litania and Requiem. Manfred Eicher Playing Komedas music with him and without him are two completely different things. I prepared for the session for a long time. If Manfred was ready to give me the chance I had to take it seriously and give something back, you know? I studied all the archive recordings and the few scores that remain many have been lost. And of course we assembled a great band. Tomasz Stanko By sheer force of his personality Komeda justified his need to control the emotional territory hitherto reserved for symphonies. He expanded the range of expression in jazz by adding a dramatized lyricism its force reaching the intensity of ecstatic and mystical experience. The new jazz aesthetic demanded a new form. Komeda introduced a directional form of arch, developed from an exposition through culmination to a final resolution. This type of form can be found in Svantetic, named for Svante Foerster, the Swedish poet who was the composers friend. Adam Slawinski Komeda was a man of as few words as he was of notes. He arranged his notes in twos or threes, into micro themes from which, through repetition and transformation, a unique sort of iteration, he would build a melody and the works form. Tomasz Tluczkiewicz The blend of control and freedom in a piece like Tomasz Stanko Tomasz Stanko worked on all of Komedas Polish soundtracks from 1964 onwards and was the composers closest musical associate. Although the For instance: Bobo Stenson, a member of the current Stanko Quartet, also leads his own trio, in which Jon Christensen is the drummer. In the 1970s Stenson played with various Jan Garbarek groups which, at different times, featured Christensen, Terje Rypdal and Palle Danielsson; simultaneously the pianist was also part of the circle of Swedish players that congregated around Bernt Rosengren. Furthermore, Rosengren and Stenson were both closely associated with Don Cherry who also performed Komedas music (in films by Skolimowski and Henning Carlsen). Christensen and Danielsson have both recorded as members of Stanko groups, while Stanko, Rypdal and Danielsson have previously recorded together under Edward Vesalas direction. Danielsson also has extensive playing experience in Sweden with Joakim Milder, one of the most gifted saxophonists of his generation. There are many more We knew that Joakim Milders tenor would be as cool as Rosengrens is hot so that had to be a good blend for the music. Then Terje Rypdal came in and, like an Tomasz Stanko Bernt Rosengren was the central figure for the music in Sweden. The scene formed itself around him and around Don Cherry, really. They were good friends. Bernt is not the kind of character to thrust himself forward or to sell his work aggressively but everyone whos played with him knows that as a musician he is one of the very strongest a master and not only in Scandinavian terms. Bobo Stenson I play regularly with Bobo Stenson, and he and I both knew hed play Komedas tunes even better than he plays mine. I gave Bobo all the archive recordings but what he plays is all his. Often he doesnt even use Komedas chords. Tomasz Stanko I had no urge to lead a band of my own all the time I was with Krzysztof Komeda. He was such a strong force, the music was so original and he always gave me plenty of space for Tomasz Stanko
